Welcome back to Class35. We’ve set the stage, and now it’s time to look at the "rules of the game". Construction is a discipline of precision, and as you will learn, preparation is the absolute key to success. About Lesson
To communicate effectively on a professional construction site, builders must move beyond common terminology and master the intellectual foundation of the trade. This involves understanding the legal and technical classifications of masonry units as defined by the National Building Regulations and specific South African National Standards (SANS).
Key Classification: Brick vs. Block While the terms are often used interchangeably in casual conversation, professional Core Construction & Brickwork Technology requires precise definitions based on SANS 227:2007 (the standard for burnt clay masonry). A masonry unit is only classified as a brick if it falls within the following maximum dimensions:
Length: No more than 300 mm.
Width: No more than 130 mm.
Height: No more than 120 mm.
